NZ Match Racing - Young blood providing strong competition for Steele
by Georgia Derrick, RNZYS Media on 13 Nov 2015
Chris Steele took the honours on Day 1 of the NZ Match Racing Champs RNZYS Media
New Zealand Match Racing Championships started Friday, with the days racing producing two clear favourites.
Chris Steels RNZYS/36 below team finished Day 1 with 5 wins from 5 flights. Not to be out done by RNZYS Youth Training Programme Skipper George Anyon. His team also taking 5 wins from 5 flights.
Steele described the sailing as “a tricky day” but his team worked well together staying ahead, rather than sailing on the defence. Steele didn’t seem too fazed by Anyon’s results “we’re going into tomorrow’s focusing on making sure we keep sailing our boat well.” - Steele
These two skippers will face each other in the first flight tomorrow morning.
Following closely behind is Dave Hazard, the RNZYS/KZ Marine Skipper had a trying day but managed to grab some much needed wins to stay in with a strong chance.
Tomorrow the competitors will look to complete the first round robin and move into the second round robin before the semi-finals, with promising winds we should see some separation on the scoreboard.
