Mining props up marine- Seiffert

by Grand Brands on 17 Sep 2012
Marine Auctions’ CEO Adrian Seiffert. Bob Wonders
The struggling marine industry is being propped up by the mining boom, according to Rivergate International Boat Show director Adrian Seiffert.

'The current economic conditions have created a less than favourable environment for Australia’s boating industry,' Mr Seiffert explained.

'However, the mining boom is helping to prop up the industry, with many workers now possessing the disposable income to spend on luxury recreation during their weeks off site.

'We are selling more and more boats to mining communities such as Rockhampton, Gladstone and Mackay. The boom also has a flow-on effect to other sectors of the industry, including berth sales which have seen growth at marinas along the Queensland coast, including here at Rivergate,' he said.

Despite increasing interest from the mining sector, Mr Seiffert acknowledges that the industry still faces challenges.
'The enduring strong Aussie dollar has resulted in many buyers purchasing new and used vessels from overseas,' Mr Seiffert lamented.

'For this reason local manufacturers need to remain competitive and a great way to market their superior offerings is through maintaining brand awareness and accessing new markets at events like the Rivergate International Boat Show,' he said.

Gold Coast manufacturer Maritimo chose to exhibit at Rivergate for this reason. Sales and marketing manager Greg Haines explained.

'In the current market it is vital that manufacturers take advantage of opportunities like this to reach new markets and build brand awareness,' Mr Haines said.

'Rivergate will afford us direct access to Brisbane families, along with fly-in, fly-out workers in Queensland mines who are increasingly purchasing large boats for pleasure,' he concluded.

Rivergate International Boat Show will be held at Rivergate Marina in Murrarie, Brisbane, from October 5 to 7.

The event is expected to attract more than 20,000 visitors; showcasing the best that life on the water has to offer.
