McConaghy Boats - Winning in moths and maxis and everything in between

Nathan Outteridge won the 2014 Moth worlds in a McConaghy built McDougall designed MACH 2 Moth at Hayling Island in the UK last week. Amazingly this is the sixth consecutive world championship win for the hydrofoiling MACH 2 moth.

The 2015 world championships will be held in Sorrento Australia starting on Jan 5 and will once again be sponsored by the McDougall McConaghy team. 450 Mach 2s have been completed at the McConaghy factory in Zhuhai China and with no sign of demand slowing additional tooling and investment in the production line in China will soon increase output. Check out the Oracle Americas cup team training in their Mach 2’s on lake Macquarie video.

Bob Oatleys McConaghy Built Reichel Pugh designed Wild Oats XI hit the start line for the Sydney Southport race sporting a new low drag bow and bow sprit modification. The McConaghy team in Sydney worked around the clock to complete the modification in time for the Southport race. The new bow design was a great success as Wild Oats disappeared over the horizon leaving the fleet in her wake. Over night the breeze filled from the south west providing some heavy running conditions and the new solid carbon bob stay and bow pole modification was tested in anger. Wild Oats finished the race in one day, two hours and 27 minutes, winning line honours (although well outside their race record), over two hours ahead of Anthony Bells Perpetual Loyal. McConaghy Boats MD Jono Morris joined Anthony and Australian cricket captain Michael Clark on board Perpetual Loyal. Clark took the helm of Perpetual Loyal on Sunday morning taking a few sailing tips from Michael Coxon, and skillfully steered the super maxi around the obstacle course created by the whales off the northern NSW coast, thoroughly enjoying the prefect sailing conditions.

The McConaghy built Ker 46 Patrice spent most of the Southport race leading overall on IRC, unfortunately for owner Tony Kirby a decision to head offshore on Sunday night cost him victory as they sailed into a windless hole which dropped them from first to ninth place overall, but managed to hold onto third place in Div one. Wild Oats XI secured third place on IRC overall and second place in Div 0. Another McConaghy built Ker design Midnight Rambler won Div 2 IRC, with the McConaghy built Kaiko designed Merlin taking third place in Div two. The legendary McConaghy built Farr 43 Wild Rose (the first Wild Oats launched in 1985) took second place in division. McConaghy Boats took a podium place in each IRC division of this year’s race. First place in PHS was Rob Fishers McConaghy built Adams and Barrett designed, Helsal 3 from Tasmania.

Wild Oats X1 and Patrice headed directly to Brisbane where they joined the McConaghy built Ker designed cruiser racer Kerumba in the Brisbane to Keppel race. Wild Oats XI took line honours, Patrice was second in IRC Div one while Kerumba was third, soundly beating the highly fancied and hyped up IRC optimised 60 footers. Patrice also took second place in ORCi Div one whilst Kerumba won on PHS.

Back in the UK, Mark Glimchers McConaghy built Ker 40 Catapult lead the Irish team to victory in the 2014 Commodores Cup last week. Catapult was top scoring boat in the regatta by over 20 points, an outstanding result in the most competitive IRC fleet in Europe.

Mean while Cowes week is currently underway, and Irvin Laidlaw’s McConaghy built Reichel Pugh designed IRC 52 Cape fling is dominating division 0 after completing 6 races so far. Follow the action Event website.
