Nathan Outteridge and Ian 'Goobs' Jensen dominated the 49er class in the two years before the London 2012 Olympics where they won the Gold medal. They had superior boat speed, great boat handling and excellent tactics.
In 2013 and onwards Nathan and Goobs were involved in the Artemis America’s Cup campaign and are now again involved heading towards the 2017 America’s Cup. Their presence on the 49er scene has been less than optimal for their 2016 Rio campaign. Almost every time they race it is a matter of first of all scraping off the rust. In contrast Peter Burling and Blair Tuke, silver medallists in London, have made every post a winner, unbeaten in the 49er class since then.
Now 15 months from Rio, Outteridge and Jensen are hitting the go button on their second Olympic campaign.
As both sailors identified in the video interview below, their main concern is the uncanny ability of the now dual 49er World Champions and World Cup Champions Burling and Tuke to get to the top mark in a race winning position.
It will be interesting to see if the Australian sailors can get their Mojo back or whether they will be the silver medallists in Rio.
