Latest yacht from Bakewell-White for Japanese owner

Kagirohi sea trialling off Tauranga SW

Last week the latest yacht from the board of www.bakewell-white.com!Bakewell-White_Yacht_Design emerged from the shed at Southern Ocean in Tauranga, New Zealand. She was commissioned by a Japanese owner.

Named 'Kagirohi' which is Japanese for ‘sky before the dawn’ the boat is destined to serve as an adventure training yacht around the waters of Japan.

The form is typical of the shorthanded race yacht and will be sailed by two experienced sailors in conjunction with six or seven Japanese youths. The primary objective is not to teach sailing, but to instil self-confidence and team work amongst the young trainees. In addition there is an intention to educate and develop pride in Japan’s maritime history.

Built from medium tech composites, the finish is spartan, more race yacht than cruiser and the yacht features race standard deck gear and carbon spars. Relatively lightweight at 5.5tonnes the yacht will also be used to tackle a number of long standing Japanese sailing records in order to help to promote the training programme.

The yacht quietly slipped into Tauranga harbour last week and was sailing the same day thanks to the preparation of Southern Ocean, Hall Spars and Doyle Sails. All systems worked well and apart from some minor rig tune adjustments the yacht is ready to begin her work up programme before shipping to Japan in January and the start of her life as a training vessel.

And if you are wondering about the reverse bow, it allows the prod to poke forward a little, and still be with hull length (important for tax and marina charges in some countries). The lines also follow the natural profile developed from the forward topside sections which have tumble-home above the chine.
