Louis Vuitton Cup racing may be on hold until the August 6 start of the LVC Semi-Finals, but the action is still hot on San Francisco Bay where all four teams continue to develop, refine and polish all aspects of their programs, from hydrofoils and rudder angles to crew choreography through complicated foiling maneuvers. Artemis Racing currently dominates headlines, as everyone is intensely interested in learning how fast they look compared to the other, more practiced teams.

Inside this issue, be sure to check out the great am-cam footage of Artemis out sailing earlier this week. The good news for the Swedish-flagged Challenger of Record is that their 'Big Blue' catamaran doesn’t seem inhibited about getting up on her foils and going, but the less good news is that the team is still in their nascent phase of learning how to handle her, and their gybes are not exactly smooth yet.

Meanwhile, at the 52 Super Series event that’s currently taking place at the 32nd annual Copa del Rey Mapfre regatta, the American-flagged 'Quantum Racing' is looking increasingly good for a win at Palma and a shot at a winning 2013 campaign. 'It’s a long regatta,' said Ed Reynolds, 'Quantum Racing’s' project manager. 'We never think about individual regattas, we think of the season-long championship, but we would love to win Copa del Rey. It is just one of those things you want to win.'

32 Copa del Rey Mapfre - Quantum Racing and Azzurra

'Quantum' has won the last four races in a row, absolutely making them the boat to beat in this Grand Prix-level contest. 'We need to get past 'Quantum Racing', they are sailing very well,' Andy Hemmings, a strategist/trimmer aboard 'Rán Racing'. 'We won the first three races, they won the next four. At the moment they are getting really good starts and controlling the fleet, more or less from the start.'

And on the industry side of sailboat racing, UK Sailmakers International was recently purchased by a large group of individual UK Sailmakers’ loft owners. 'For the first time a group of independently owned sail lofts will control the reins of their central organization and have a say in how that organization operates,' said Butch Ulmer, the company’s founder.

'This will be a unique experiment and one that has never been attempted before. I expect that having such an experienced group of sailmakers involved in the company’s management will enhance our product line and positively impact what UK Sailmakers delivers to our customers,' continued Ulmer. 'I intend to remain involved in sailmaking and am looking forward to my new role as an advisor to the new management group.'
