If elected, the Queensland Liberal National Party would increase recreational fishing opportunities with a buyback of commercial net-fishing licenses worth up to $10m.
Campbell Newman LNP
Leader Campbell Newman said the party had discussed the policy with fishing lobby Sunfish, environmental group WWF and the tourism lobby to create the scheme to reduce pressure on fish stocks north from Tin Can Bay to the Reef.
These measures and investment in marine infrastructure were vital to 'ensure fishing continues to be very much a part of life in Queensland,' according to Newman.
'Fishing is one of the most popular pastimes in Queensland, with an estimated 750,000 recreational fishers and an important commercial fishing industry,' he said.
'It's vital we get the balance right and we have a comprehensive plan to protect our marine environment and sustainably manage both recreational and commercial fishing.
'The LNP's plan will also deliver a real benefit for our dugongs, turtles and inshore turtles in Queensland waters.'
