Kieler Woche - 29ers- Salamon and Hallstrom are European Champions

The sailing event that showed all weather phenomena during the nine days, from spring awakening to summer thunderstorms and autumn storms. But on the last day, the crews of the 14 international classes could be sent out to onto the water for a few more last races.

The quantity of the Kieler Woche winners in the international part increased to six: Moritz Paschen (Potsdam-Germany) in the Laser 4.7, Frithjof Schwerdt (Kiel-Germany) in the Musto Skiff, Frank Schoenfeldt (Hamburg-Germany) with his crew in the J/24, Jan-Philipp Hoffman-Felix Brockerhoff (Duesseldorf-Germany) in the 505, Lauritz Bockelmann-Kim Liedtke (Kellenhusen-Germany) in the Hobie 16 and Helge and Christian Sach (Zarnekau-Germany) in the Formula18.

For the 29ers the final of the European Championship became nerve-racking in the end. The leading Spanish team Nil Mas-Oriol Mahiques did miss their chances for a title, when they were disqualified for crossing the start line too early, and were forced to watch the competitors move up the ranking. The Swedish team Salamon-Julius Hallstrom jumped from rank five right to the top. Coming in seventh in this race, Jasper Steffens and Tom-Lennart Brauckmann from Kiel (Germany) could not really tell the overall result in the end when crossing the finish line and gave themselves only a cautious high five. 'But when we passed the boat of our trainer Patrick Boehmer, he just looked, then smiled and said: 'Guys, you are second', told Jasper Steffens about the happy moment, which the trainer also fully enjoyed.

The brothers Helge and Christian Sach did not expect their eighth victory at the Kiel Week, the seventh in the Formula18 catamaran: 'In the meantime, we are much more on the way with the big catamaran, so the strategy is completely different. At first I could not get into it', said crew Christian Sach. But with two wins on the final day, they could gain the top position. 'Kieler Woche is always cool. It is a good test for the World Championship. And we are already having a look at the next year, when the F18 Worlds will take place in Kiel. There will be around 160 boats at the start line', said Helge Sach.

Musto Skiff European Master Frithjof Schwerdt also had to be worried at the end of the competitions in Kiel. The athlete from the YC in Potsdam (Germany) did lose a bit of track of the line after a confident start and let the national competitor Ahlmann (Buedelsdorf-Germany) come as close as one point.

For Kieler Woche record winner Wolfgang Hunger (Strande-Germany) it was a negative surprise at the event. After winning the Kieler Woche seven times in a row and 21 times in total, he was not taking off. In the end it was only rank five on the list for the five time World Champion with his crew Julien Kleiner. Jan-Philipp Hoffman with crew Felix Brockerhoff stepped into the breach, relegating the Danish World Champion in 2012 Jan Saugmann to second place.
Lithuanian Viktorija Andrulyte pushed herself to first place in the Laser Radial. Second in the national ranking of the international classes were the Danish with four wins.

In the OK Dinghy Bo Petersen kept the former World Champion André Budzien from Schwerin (Germany) on distance, and Soeren Dulong Andreasen did sail a series of a world champion in the Contender. Denmark against Norway was the fight between the nations at the top of the Europe fleet. In the end, Anna Munch (Denmark) decided it for herself against the Norwegian Kristoffer Rosmo and her fellow countryman Gustav Wantzin. Per Buch won for Denmark with his Folkboat crew. The gold winner from 2012 caught the team of Ulf Kipcke on the last day.

In the Flying Dutchman, the sight was familiar with Majthenyi Szabolcs and Andras Domokos (Hungary) winning against the Danish FD Olympic winner from 1988 Joergen Bojsen-Moeller. So the Hungarians won Kiel Week for the fifth time since 2009.

In the 420, the Germany could not place a team in the top ten. Four weeks before the World Championship in Travemuende the victory went to Israel for Moar Abu and Yoav Rooz.
