Karnival Monsoon Is Back Again

by Monsoon Cup on 28 Sep 2011 KUALA LUMPUR (28 September 2011): The Monsoon Cup has always been more than just a sailing event. It is about connecting to the rakyat of Terengganu, helping them financially by creating jobs and bringing in more business during the monsoon season and exposing the state’s rich cultural heritage to both local and foreign tourists.

That was the original vision behind the Karnival Monsoon. It is also about the joy of sports and bringing the rakyat together, which was why last year’s Karnival Monsoon was such a big hit with everyone.

This year’s Karnival Monsoon will kick off to a start on 30th September – 1st October 2011, with a series of activities on a weekly basis for the whole family. Among the activities planned during this period are colouring competitions for children, telematches, quiz competitions, traditional games and ‘Monsoon Fest Idol 2011’ karaoke competition. New this year are sailing activities, which include sailing and kayaking demonstrations. The public can also try a hand at these activities under the supervision of trained professionals.

“In addition to the National level kayak and long boat competitions, there will be additional activities during the last leg of this promotional campaign, which will coincide with the Monsoon Cup 2011, where more ‘sporting’ events for the entire family such as 3-on-3 beach football, 3-on-3 beach netball, and even Muay Thai being contested” said Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman, Director of Terengganu Youth and Sports Department.

Kemaman will kick off the activities this weekend from Sept 30-Oct 1, followed by Pantai Teluk Lipat in Dungun (Oct 14-15), Muara sungai Marang (Oct 21-22), Pantai Bukit Keluang in Besut (Oct 28-29), Pantai Rhu 10 in Setiu (Nov 4-5), Kuala Berang Waterfront in Hulu Terengganu (Nov 11-12) and finally Ri-Yaz Heritage Marina Resort &Spa in Kuala Terengganu (Nov 22-27) in conjunction with Monsoon Cup.

“The reasoning behind this 7 district campaign is to ensure no one feels left out from the celebrations. Also, there is a greater focus on water-based activities like sailing demonstrations and exhibitions and canoe clinics this year, in line with the Ministry’s development plans for sailing” commented Aziz.

He also added “We are working with the various District Officers and departments concerned to ensure everything goes smoothly during the Karnival Monsoon”
