Francis Joyon on IDEC hits 575 miles sailed in 24 hours as he cruised ahead of Ellen MacArthur's 2005 position. The 97ft trimaran is now 1,300 miles ahead in the race to break her record.

As expected, Joyon is poised to join the major West schemes which revolve around Antarctica. After a first part of a breathtaking race, Joyon is expected within the next two days to conclude the Atlantic Ocean and begin the great journey to the 'Land of the unknown', the South Seas, distant and unknown, deadly and feared.

For the record IDEC has caught up with four of the eight monohull 60 feet IMOCA boats that left twelve days from Barcelona for a similar world tour.

He is now near his friend Roland 'Bilou' Jourdain (Véolia), which sails from 43 degrees south with Jean-Luc Nélias.

Francis Joyon and IDEC are now 1,300 miles ahead of the reference point of Ellen MacArthur in 2005.
