One final light air race concluded the first act of J/70 Alcatel Onetouch Italian Trophy, hosted by the Yacht Club de Monaco. For the last two days, twenty-eight J’70s have done battle on the waters off the Principality for the first event of the Italian Open National Championship, with an opening day of absolutely perfect racing conditions.

On the final day, when collective hopes of any racing were quite low after a long on land postponement, a light breeze finally materialized and the J/70s enjoyed the last race where, strong from the start, Alessio Marinelli’s UJI blistered the course, with Ingemar Sundstedt’s Rocad Racing and Luca Domenici’ Notaro Team challenging the most right at the finish. Finally, Marinelli took his first win, followed by Sundstedt and Luca Domenici’s Notaro Team remained consistent finishing third.

Nonetheless, at the top of the overall classification the second day has produced a carbon copy of the former one and coming out on top, with five races on the scoreboard is Sundsted on Rocad Racing followed by Luca Domenici on Notaro Team in second. A heated battle for third through the fifth positions raged between Franco Solerio on L’Elagain, Pierluigi Orsoni on Intoxica and Jacopo Carrain on Carpe Diem; all finished overall in that order, respectively.

The first team among the Italians played the five races with prowess scoring nothing less than a first, a second or a third with the exception of race 2 where he settled for a 15th place finish and, thus far, he is now the Italian team to beat.

Italian J/70 Class President Vittorio di Mauro praised the event organising committee from the Yacht Club de Monaco, the next arena for the J/70 European Championship:

'The new format of the J/70 Italian Championship has received a good support among the foreign crews, especially those from Monaco,' said Di Vittorio. 'This success will push us to propose this formula again in the future.'

The J/70 teams now prepare for the next event of the J/70 Alcatel Onetouch Italian Trophy, taking place in Sanremo, Italy, on April 26-27.
