ISAF Sailing Worlds, Santander - Four medals for the Aussies + Video

by Cora Zillich on 22 Sep 2014
2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships, Santander - Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, 49er Thom Touw http://www.thomtouw.com
Australia won two bronze medals on the final day of the Santander 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships as racing wrapped up in the Spanish City bringing the overall Australian medal tally to four – including one gold (470M), one silver (Laser) and two bronze (49er, Nacra17).

On the final day (Sunday 21 September) Olympic gold medallists Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen took away a bronze medal in the 49er – Men’s Skiff class in the tightest battle of the day. Jason Waterhouse (NSW) and Lisa Darmanin (NSW) won the first World Championship medal for Australia in the Nacra17, which will be new on the 2016 Olympic program, adding another bronze to the Australian medal tally.

Already on Saturday, Olympic champion Mat Belcher (QLD) and Will Ryan (QLD) won the gold medal in the Men’s 470 -- the Men’s Two Person Dinghy. They successfully defended their title bringing Belcher’s overall World Champion count to a historic consecutive fifth title.

On Thursday (18 September) Tom Burton (NSW) claimed Australia’s first medal of the ISAF Sailing World Championships – a silver in the Laser class.

As an Olympic Qualification event World Championships, Australia also secured a spot at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in six of the ten sailing events, including the 470M, Laser, 49er, 49er FX, Nacra 17 and Finn classes.

It was challenging but successful week especially with regards to the up and coming talent as Yachting Australia’s Performance Director Peter Conde summarised the event:

'It was a super challenging week and we’re very happy to come away with four medals. By the time we get to 2016 we’d just like to change the colour of some of those medals, but we have to be happy with the results here, particularly given the nature of the regatta.'

'We also are particularly happy with a lot of the youngsters coming through – epitomised by Jason and Lisa winning a bronze medal at such a young age. And for example Jake Lilley who qualified the Finn for Rio and he’s only 21. That bodes really well for this team – not just for Rio but also for Tokyo 2020.'

On the final day Australia was represented with two crews in each of the 49er and Nacra 17 medal races with 2,500 to 3,000 fans watching the action in a variable breeze of 6-11 knots.

The real fight in the 49er Medal Race was for the silver medal in the battle of Olympic gold medallists. Jonas Warrer, the Beijing 2008 Gold medallist with Anders Thomsen (DEN) were only two points off the London 2012 Gold medallists, Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen. The gold medal had already been decided before the medal race with New Zealand’s defending World Champs Peter Burling and Blair Tuke in an unassailable lead after the penultimate day on Saturday (20 September).

Several lead changes between Australian and Denmark throughout the race and a photo finish made this a nail biter to watch, which Denmark overtaking the Australians on the finish line to beat the Australians by the narrowest of margins. This moved them into the silver medal position, while it was the bronze for Australia.

'Going into the medal race we were two points off the Danish team so effectively it was a who-beat-who scenario. But we also had the Portuguese and Austria right behind us so we had to be mindful of where they were in the race. The Danish beat us on the finishing line by about a pole length, so it was a pretty disappointing day for us to be honest, after we sailed so well all week,' Nathan Outteridge said.

'I’m pretty upset about the end result today but that's life and there are two years to go before the Olympics.'

It was challenging week for Outteridge and Jensen with testing weather and racing conditions as Outteridge explained,

'It's been a very long and challenging week. We've had a lot of light winds, we've been postponed on the water for up to five to six hours on several occasions and the other extreme of racing in over 30 knots of breeze.'

'It's been a really tough week mentally and physically, probably one of the longest ones we've had in a long time.'

The duo qualified the 49er boat class for Australia at the 2016 Olympic games earlier in the week and while they did not get the end result they wanted, Outteridge was positive about where they are at with their eyes set on Rio 2016.

'This event marks the end of 2014 for us in the international events, we've got Sail Melbourne coming up in December and between now and then Goobs and I are off to join Artemis in San Francisco. It's never easy to have two full time jobs but to basically podium at every event this year and running two full time jobs is a huge achievement for us.'

'We always knew this year was going to be tough. Last year we basically took a year off and when you take a year off from any Olympic sport it takes a long time to get back to the top. That is what this year is about - trying to identify what we need to do and we've got a good list. It's now for us to work out what we need to do for next year so we can start winning some events and start to build confidence come Rio. I'm not going to tell you what we're going to do but we've got plenty of things up our sleeve that we can work on!'

It is a long time since Australia had two crews in a 49er World Championship medal race, showing the depth of the current Australian 49er squad around coach Emmett Lazich. And it was a successful first World Championship for David Gilmour (WA) and Rhys Mara (NSW) who finished overall seventh and posted a performance that qualifies them for the Australian Sailing Team.

'We’re quite happy with how we've gone overall this being our first Worlds. The Australian Sailing Team is the pinnacle in Australia to qualify for and it's extremely difficult and we're stoked to have made it into the team,' said David Gilmour after finishing the event.

Also the in the Nacra17 the gold medal was already decided before going into Sunday’s medal race. French team Billy Besson and Marie Riou sealed the Nacra 17 World Championship with a day to spare after a dominant week of racing. But from second to sixth there were a lot of possible changes.

Jason Waterhouse (NSW) and Lisa Darmanin (NSW) went into the medal race as the highest ranked Australian crew in third place and were just one point behind the second placed Italian crew. In a tight race which saw several position changes, Waterhouse and Darmanin finished fifth which put them into overall bronze medal position – a result Waterhouse, skipper of the 2013 Australian Youth America’s Cup Team, was very excited about.

'It was really nice to have the red dot (third) on the sail going into the medal race. That had been a big target for us but the points were close. We couldn't let more than four boats between us and another competitor. We just went out there and sailed as best we could and I'm totally elated with the result.'

'The medal race was really tricky and that was some of the hardest sailing I've ever had. But we kept our cool, Lisa did a great job to keep the boat going fast and it was unbelievable. What an amazing feeling, this is definitely a career highlight for me and I'm sure I'll always remember it.'

And even better to be able to share this moment with a family member and to have the support of the team: 'Obviously being cousins we're really tight and I think it makes it extra special to do it with someone who you really love a lot. There will definitely be a big party at home with the families.'

'We had a really strong Australian Sailing Squad here and we couldn't have done it without them. And it’s really our fantastic coach Andrew Landenberger - he's really the unsung hero here. He's the one who's got us going around the course quickly and making good decisions and keeping our cool. So thanks Landy!'

Olympic medallists Darren Bundock (NSW) and Nina Curtis (NSW) finished the event in overall ninth – a result the duo was not too happy with, but from an overall perspective there were a lot of positives to take away.

'We've had a great year together considering we've just completed our first year together. We started in Miami earlier this year and we've managed to get two bronze World Cup medals and a silver medal in the test event in Rio. So when you look at the year as a whole it's been pretty successful for us, especially being a year later to the class than everyone else so we're pretty happy with how it's gone so far,'

'It's been a really exciting regatta for the Australian Nacra Team, everyone's inside the top 15. We've got the right people around us and with Jason and Lisa in third it proves that.'

'It's obviously a three-year plan for us and this is year one out of three so still two to go and we're working towards our goals and slowly ticking them off. We've kind of been playing catch up and now it's really time to put in some good results for next year.'

The Nacra 17 is the new mixed-gender multi-hull event on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games Sailing program and Australia currently has a strong Nacra 17 squad with four boats at the World Championships all finishing in the top 20 and qualifying the class for Rio earlier in the week.
