ICSA Senator's Cup

by ICSA on 3 Oct 2011

ICSA Senator’s Cup - On Saturday, great breeze from the Northwest and a stunning rainbow greeted sailors on Horseshoe Bend of the St. Mary's River to start the morning. Perhaps it was just PRO Leah Anderson Magana '02 who brought the rainbow with her after nine years in Hawaii.

Twelve races were sailed in each division in two fleets. A division started in FJ's and B in 420's: both fleets had plenty of capsizes. Coaches formed and excellent safety patrol. Lunch break happened at 1pm and the lone protest of the day was heard by chief judge Guy Barbato resulting in a DSQ while the Seahawk freshmen helped competitors remove the mud sharks from the tops of a half dozen mains.

Racing resumed shortly after 2pm with slightly lighter breezes around ten knots. The divisional switch happened after race 8. Unfortunately, competitors missed the annual SMC Great Bamboo Boat Race which was held concurrently and is always good for a laugh.

Sunday: Those who arrived early were treated to a beautiful site as the fog lifted in patches across the St. Mary's River and seemed to tumble down the course before disappearing. Racing was slightly delayed as the RC tried to wait for Fordham University who had their van stuck in a ditch. Eventually the racing resumed without them. Coaches served as rescue boats and racing resumed in a 10-15 knot NW. Races all weekend were W-4's. All boats were ashore by noontime.

Congratulations to the ODU Monarchs with a huge push Sunday to win the Senators' Cup. ODU, St. Mary's, UVA and Georgetown all qualify for the War Memorial from the South region of the conference. Kean State University was a no show.
