At around 5am today, a 16.4 metre timber trawler called Henry Lawson collided with the breakwater at Harrington, about 200 kilometres north of Newcastle. The three crew members did not sustain any injuries.
Harrington Henry Lawson crash
The vessel is believed to be carrying 1500 litres of diesel which may be leaking slowly due to damage on the port side of the vessel.
The vessel is being prepared to be towed to Harrington Beach, north of the seawall.
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) is leading the salvage effort and working onsite with HAZMAT.
A boom will be installed around the vessel to contain any potential pollution.
The cause of the incident has not yet been determined. An RMS Boating Safety Officer is on site investigating. A clean up notice will be issued to the vessel owner.
While this investigation is continuing, the NSW Government’s top priority is protecting the marine environment, the safety of workers onsite and the public.
