Gold Fleet for Canadians at the Laser Worlds

by Canadian Sailing Team on 8 May 2012
David Wright (CAN) Rolex/Daniel Forster http://www.regattanews.com
Two races in the books today at the 2012 Laser World Championships in light shifty COLD winds in Boltenhagen, Germany. Wind was supposed to be better in the afternoon and combined with the rain and temperatures the RC postponed racing till 1 pm.

Blue fleet raced inner loop and at the first mark David Wright was in fifth and Chris Dold in seventh. In the second wind David works the right and takes the lead at the second top mark. He holds this after a tacking dual with Australian Tom Burton on the last little upwind to the finish. Even after all the tacks he crossed the line shivering! Second WIN in a row for David Wright!. Chris Dold finishes eight.

In yellow fleet Lee Parkhill was in sixth but had to sail around the fleet coming down wind. Parkhill scores 15th in that race, one place a head of Robert Davis.

The second race of the day had a good start for Chris Dold who rounds the top mark in 10th, just a head of Alex Heinzemann in 11th. David rounds in 26th. Dold passes one boat on the last run to finish ninth. A solid day which moves him up to 32nd overall. Heinzi dropped back after rounding the second top mark in 17th, one behind David. David has a great last run and finishes 12th. Heinzemann loses some boats on the last upwind to finish 19th just missing Gold fleet. Only the first 56 boats go in to the gold fleet.

Three Canadians will be sailing in the Gold fleet tomorrow, David Wright in fourth, Lee Parkhill in 18th, and Chris Dold in 32nd.

More wind forecasted for tomorrow and warmer temperatures!
