European Laser Senior Championships - Breeze improves on day 3

by Laser Europeans on 13 Jun 2014
European Laser Senior Championships 2014 Thom Touw http://www.thomtouw.com
Finally a nicer breeze for the third day of the Laser Europeans in Split. Still shifty, but the strength was better, 10 to 14 knots. Two races for all fleets, without waiting, a really great day, last day of the qualifiers. A proper Summer storm forced the race committee to call it a day after two races, they had to send the fleet home, rain caught up with some sailors, but fortunately no greater harm was done.

It is very tight at the top in both Olympic fleets, just as it should be. Day in day out Robert Scheidt (BRA) made progress, and after five races sits on the top of the leaderboard. Only one point seperates Scheidt and Tonci Stipanovi (CRO) in the second place, who is the leader for the European title. After a bad race yesterday and a 20th place, a major setback for the three-time European champion in last four years, Stipanovic knew that he cannot afford any more mistakes. A bullet and a fifth place were the consequence. A similar battle for the overall trophy was fought between these two amazing sailors.

Also last year in Ireland. But there are more faces to watch for. Three days to go only three points separate the top five sailors, 13 the top ten. Rutger van Schaardenburg (NED) is in the third place, one point behind Stipanovic, and one point ahead of Pavlos Kontides (CYP) in fourth and Nick Thompson (GBR) in fifth. It is still very early in the race, as they all say tomorrow with the finals a new event begins.

In the Radial women fleet a new leader, young Svenja Wenger (GER), who was quite surprised to see that she is leading the fleet. 'I didn't expect to do so well and of course I am very happy,' said Svenja with a bright smile. Marit Bouwmeester (NED) has the same points in second place, and two more put Tuula Tenkanen (FIN) in third place. In five races, Weger scored two bullets, a second and two fourth places, Bouwmeester didn't win a race yet, but has a fascinating score in the shifty breeze with four second places and one third. Marcin Rudawski (POL) is on the top in Radial men.

Three days of final series start tomorrow, six more races scheduled, with second discard coming in place after ten races.
