America's Cup: German team pulls out of Red Bull Youth series
Tue, 14 May 2013
The German team in the Red Bull Youth America's Cup, has issued a statement announcing their withdrawal from the series, citing safety concerns emanating from the Artemis Racing incident last Thursday in San Francisco..
The Google translated version of the statement, from German, reads:
The tragic accident of the British Olympic sailor Andrew Simpson moved the Sailing Team Germany (STG) and the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein (NRV) to withdraw. The 'STG / NRV Youth team' that had qualified for the 'Red Bull Youth America's Cup' in San Francisco, will not be at the start of September. The health of young sailors should not be compromised.
After becoming aware of the tragic death of professional and Olympic sailor Andrew Simpson, the German organizers pulled back their participation in the Youth America's Cup. The 36-year-old Briton, died in San Francisco after a capsize of the AC72 catamaran, last Thursday, while training for the 34th America's Cup, .
'The tragic accident has prompted us to evaluate our participation in the Youth America's Cup from scratch. When it comes to such a tragedy for the world's best sailors, we want to exclude the risk of early to endanger the health of our athletes and Olympic ambitions. I have known Andrew for a long time and l'm shocked by his death, 'explains Klaus Lame, NRV director of sport. The decision was a unanimous one by the STG and NRV.
'The forces that act when sailing a 22-metre racing catamaran, are hardly manageable even for professionals. The risk of an accident is constantly present'. Hopefully the management of the America's Cup takes this incident as an opportunity to rethink the direction for the future, the format and sports equipment, 'said Oliver Schwall, managing director at STG and former Tornado world champion.
The German team had qualified in September in February in an elimination series with a total of twelve junior teams competing in the final. The AC45 to be used in the finals of Youth America's Cup, is a 'little brother' of the AC72, is about eight metres shorter, but no less spectacular and unpredictable.
At the America's Cup Media Conference this afternoon, local time, organisers claimed that the story above is in reference to the German Sailing Federation pulling out of the event, but the team itself has not been withdrawn.
If the team itself did withdraw, organisers said there were plenty of other teams willing to take their place, and the fleet would not be reduced.
Several of the teams in the Red Bull Youth Ameriva's Cup have been entered and selected by their National Authorities
