Steinlager ANZAC 18fter Trophy: Sunday brings respite from big breezes
Sun, 28 Apr 2013

The light airs in the final races of the Steinlager 18ft Skiff ANZAC regatta were a welcome respite for the crews after a punishing opening three days.

Once again, it was Alex Vallings and his Kiwi crew of Chris Kitchen and Josh McCormack onboard C-Tech and Australian Thurlow Fisher Lawyers setting the pace.

The Australian crew of Michael Coxon, Trent Barnabas and David O'Connor picked up a first and second in the final two races, holding onto their three point lead the previous day.

David McDairmid, Andrew Archibald and Mark Overington Yamaha Grey rounded out the podium after putting on a display of both great crew work and tactical nous throughout the regatta

Todays more moderate conditions meant the crews got to break out their bigger rigs and transformed the racing from a battle of attrition into more tactical warfare. The racing was significantly closer than previous days, with boats often tacking and gybing within only a few boat lengths of each other. Those that failed to read the patch winds and tricky tides correctly could expect to tumble down the fleet.

The regatta, which is the only international 18 footer event held in NZ is a perfect end to the summer of skiff racing and is an ideal tune up for the Kiwi crews who are making their way to San Francisco in September to compete in the International Skiff Regatta, held alongside the America’s Cup.
