Many of the Volvo Ocean Race fleet commented on the picturesque departure from Auckland as the fleet left the outer Hauraki Gulf and its islands and landmarks.
Then a day or so later they caught the skirts of Cyclone Pam as she headed towards the Southern Ocean. After a day or two of heavy weather sailing in a sea-state left over from the Cyclone.
Now the story has turned on its ear, with instead of enjoying fast downwind rides in the Roaring Forties, they are sailing to windward in the Southern Ocean. It would now seem they will not gets winds on over 30 kts before Cape Horn.
In this video shot from onboard Team Brunel, we see the fleet leave Auckland and then get an inside view of the battering taken as the fleet caught Cyclone Pam.
