Qu’est-ce qui attire tant l’équipière de Team SCA ? Et bien, les alizés qui occuperont une bonne partie de cette étape à cheval sur deux continents. « Dans les alizés, tu peux naviguer dans un vent portant de 15 à 20 nœuds » explique Brouwer. Simon Fisher, le navigateur d’Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing est plus prudent. « Même s’il y a beaucoup d’alizés, ça reste une étape difficile ».

« Comment aller jusqu’à Cabo Frio aussi vite que possible et comment rejoindre les alizés ? » demande t’il. « On peut aller à la côte, ce qui signifie que l’on y est pour un moment ou alors investir dans une route au large. Mais dans ces cas là, tu peux te faire dépasser par les bateaux qui sont sur une route plus directe. »

Andrew Cape (Team Brunel) connait bien cette zone dans laquelle il a navigué à plusieurs reprises et il a quelques réponses. « Après le départ, l’idée générale est d’attraper les alizés de Sud Ouest aussi vite que possible. A priori, nous allons devoir passer le long de la côte pour rejoindre l’équateur. En passant par cette route, il y a une zone de haute pression permanente. En approchant de l’équateur, nous allons naviguer dans le Pot au Noir pour la quatrième fois depuis que nous avons quitté Alicante. »



Après cela, nous allons naviguer dans l’hémisphère nord et attraper les alizés de nord est. La probabilité d’un vent instable va augmenter auprès les Bermudes. Il faudra composer avec des forts courants océaniques, des basses pressions et des vents d’Ouest.

C’est en effet sur cette dernière partie du parcours que tout pourrait se jouer. Les températures vont commencer à descendre et les vents de terre deviendront difficiles à négocier.

Lors de la dernière édition, la flotte s’était arrêtée à Miami. Les quelques milles qu’il faudra faire en plus pour rejoindre Newport seront importants.
