Holandês Hans Harrevoets morreu afogado num 18 de maio durante a perna transatlântica. A tragédia serve como um aviso aos velejadores que disputam a edição 2014-15.

O dia 18 de maio de 2006 entrou para história da Volvo Ocean Race. A data marca o triste aniversário da morte do holandês Hans Harrevoets. O velejador de 32 anos morreu afogado após uma onda varrer o convés de seu barco, o ABN AMRO TWO. A situação da etapa entre Nova Iorque e Portsmouth ficou ainda mais negativa, pois o barco com o corpo do atleta a bordo foi resgatar a tripulação do Movistar, comandado pelo holandês Bouwe Bekking, que afundou no mesmo período no Atlântico Norte. Foi a última das cinco ocorrências fatais da Volta ao Mundo em 42 anos de história.

'A regata é um álbum de fotos repleto de sentimentos fortes e momentos de emoção. Eu nunca vou esquecer do discurso de Petra van Rij, viúva de Hans Horrevoets que tragicamente perdeu a vida na edição de 2005-06. Na cerimônia de entrega de prêmio, ela pediu para ninguém esquecer o que a regata significa. A Volvo Ocean Race é real', disse Knut Frostad, CEO da Volvo Ocean Race.

Hoje, os velejadores estão no mesmo Atlântico disputando a sétima etapa entre Newport e Lisboa. Os barcos deixaram os Estados Unidos no domingo (17) e devem demorar até nove dias para completar o percurso de mais de 5 mil quilômetros até Portugal.

'Se você olhar para a história, a etapa reserva quebras de equipamento, um barco afundado e uma pessoa que perdeu sua a vida. Sabemos que estamos indo para a Europa e as equipes vão levar ao extremo', disse Bouwe Bekking, hoje comandante do Team Brunel.

No placar, Dongfeng e Abu Dhabi puxam a fila da liderança. Os dois disputam claramente o título desta edição. Atrás aparecem quase iguais MAPFRE, Team SCA, Team Brunel e Team Alvimedica. Mas as posições mudam constantemente.
