Rio100 wins Newport Beach to Cabo San Lucas on debut

RIO 100 - Start - 2014 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race Rolex / Carlo Borlenghi http://www.carloborlenghi.net
The Bakewell-White supermaxi 'Rio100' has taken Line Honours in the 800nm 2015 Newport Beach (Calif. USA) to Cabo San Lucas (Mexico) International Yacht Race.

Manouch Mosheyadi and his team won on debut in their home waters.

Light airs meant that the 2005 monohull course record remained safe with Rio finishing just over half an hour outside the record mark. However the line honours win is a great start to Rio’s US campaign and the build up to their TransPac race later in the year, particularly as they were able to comfortably finish ahead of the Transpac record holder “Wizard” who kept them honest all the way to Mexico.

After a year-long stint in New Zealand and Australia building and trialing the boat it is satisfying for Manouch Mosheyadi to finally bring his new baby home to California and begin his racing programme in style.

Rio100 is completely manually powered, and without a canting keel. She was rebuilt in the Cookson Yard in Auckland NZ, and launched late last year. She has been designed and modified for a serious tilt at winning the prestigious Barn Door Trophy for the first manually powered yacht home in the Transpac Race from Long Beach, California to Honolulu, Hawaii.
