PA Consulting Allen RS Feva World Championships - Day 2

by Frances Peters on 22 Jul 2015
2015 PA Consulting Allen RS Feva World Championships - Day 2 Eventstream Media
A rainy morning at the PA Consulting Allen RS Feva Worlds quickly turned into a warm and bright but blustery day for the final three races of the qualifying series.

The first race was one for the Swedish with three boats inside the top five across the fleets. Oscar Andersson and Rebecca Flohr, after a strong day yesterday, continued their form with a fifth while teammates, Hedvig Hedstrom and Stina Langenius took second in the same flight. Meanwhile Elin Nordin and Samuel Fredriksson took third in their flight, just ahead of Lithuanian team, Simonas Jersovas and Vejas Strelciunas. Hot on their heels in fifth place was USA team, Kim Abma and Bente Knoppers. Jack Lucas and Lucas Marshall made it look easy, posting another bullet to their string of first places.

An offshore breeze saw big gusts coming off the land on to the race course. The Swedish teams seemed at home in the conditions as Andersson and Flohr posted a third, keeping themselves well in the hunt, while Nordin and Fredriksson took second. Italian teams had a strong race with Giacomo Giambarda and Daniele Minoni posting a third place, while and Nicolo Codeghini and Edoardo Gamba and Giorgio Fossati and Nicola Torchio both took a fourth place in their fleets. Dutch team, Ties Van Der Stroom and Lookeren Campagne were having a better day in the breeze and took fifth in their fleet following a sixth in the first race of the day. Ian Bird and Jake Hardman (GBR), notoriously lovers of the breeze, posted a second bullet of the day in their fleet, moving them into the lead overall.

Finishing off their day with a perfect score, Bird and Hardman took another bullet, leaving them in the lead going into the final series tomorrow. Jersovas and Strelciunas (LTU) took a second place in their fleet putting them in fifth place overnight. Swedish Boats, Andersson and Flohr and Nordin and Fredriksson took a third place in the final race, sending them into the final series in seventh and eighth place respectively.

The evening saw one boat from each of 14 nations compete in the Nations Cup Showdown. Nip and tuck racing between the beer tents and food stalls on the promenade and the spectacular tallship, ‘Passat’ saw the top four from each of the semi-finals go through to the final race. Sunshine, wind and exciting live commentary meant crowds of spectators gathered to get in on the action. Lithuania crossed the line first to win the Nations Cup title, followed by Germany and the Netherlands in hot persuit.

Fired up after a windy day’s racing and nail-biting evening sprint racing, sailors will now head over to the historic tallship for dinner and evening entertainment. The event will celebrate completion of the qualifying series at the PA Consulting Allen RS Feva World Championships 2015.

Tomorrow, the fleet will be split into Gold, Silver and Bronze fleets based on their ranking after today. Boats will carry forward their rank rather than their score, so the points stay close and anything can happen. Racing will kick off at 11.30 tomorrow on the media course and all coverage will be live! Tune in here.
