Velejador brasileiro, campeão da Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09, foi o primeiro a receber honraria pelos seus feitos na modalidade. A escolha foi unânime.

Cinco vezes medalhista olímpico, Torben Grael inaugura um dos importantes prêmios da vela mundial. O Magnus Olsson Prize está nas mãos do brasileiro pelos seus feitos na modalidade. Além das medalhas olímpicas, com direito a dois ouros na Star (Atlanta-96 e Atenas-2004), o velejador levou o Ericsson 4 ao título da Volvo Ocean Race na temporada 2008-09. O atleta também liderou a inédita campanha verde e amarela na Volta ao Mundo de 2005-06 com o Brasil 1.

A cerimônia ocorreu nesta quinta-feira (26), em Estocolmo, na Suécia, país de Magnus Olsson. O velejador faleceu em 2013, em Lanzarote, na Espanha. O sueco era um dos mentores do Team SCA, time 100% feminino que disputará a Volvo Ocean Race nessa temporada.


'Magnus Olsson foi um dos velejadores mais competentes e completos de todos os tempos', disse Torben Grael. 'Receber esse prêmio com seu nome me enche de orgulho e satisfação. Magnus, com o seu conhecimento e generosidade, foi um dos pilares da nossa conquista da Volvo Ocean Race em 2008-09.'

Além de Torben Grael, dois jovens atletas receberam uma bolsa por meio da fundação que leva o nome do velejador sueco. Simon Lundmark, de 18 anos, corre na classe Laser, e Albin Johnsson, de 17 anos, veleja na classe Europa. Ambos vão receber 15.000 Coroas (moeda da Suécia) e terão o apoio de Torben Grael como uma espécie de mentor.

'Nosso objetivo com as bolsas de estudo é inspirar mais jovens velejadores suecos a se tornar profissionais no futuro. Eu acho que Magnus teria ficado feliz com esse apoio e por servir de inspiração. Esse era o seu sonho,' disse a sócia de Olsson, Viveca Eckeström, que também integra o conselho da fundação. Volvo Ocean Race
