Kieler Woche – Front runners span five nations

by Herman Hell on 25 Jun 2014 On day four of Kieler Woche following three days of strong winds, there was only a light breeze on the outer fjord in Kiel. But that did not really make life of the race directors and sailors easier, since the crews proceeded on their courses at a snail’s pace - too slow to get a complete race program done.

For the German sailors in the eight Olympic classes they had a lot of light moments despite some dark ones in the 49ers. The German Sailing Association (DSV) is going into the Olympic finals with three leading sailors, two are on the go on position two and the Paralympic classes remain a German domain.

The 49ers only went out on the race course for a short trip and came back into the harbour by midday - but with the German crews’ heads hanging. The best athletes of the DSV at the moment, Erik Heil and Thomas Ploessel (Kiel/Germany), were disappointed. The 21st position in the seventh race did not yet do any harm, since it was their discard and not included in the final result. So they remain at the top of the fleet.

The 49erFX women had an interplay of going out and back in. Only the second time, a race was able to be sailed. Victoria Jurczok and Anika Lorenz (Kiel/Germany) managed a good starting basis for the final, which for the Skiffs is sailed in three short races. With a rank two, the sixths of the World Championship moved up in the overall ranking onto rank two behind the Danish team Jena Mai Hansen and Katja Salskov-Iversen.

Paul Kohlhoff and Carolina Werner (Kiel/Germany) were completely satisfied with the only race of the day in the Nacra 17 on the TV course. The duo succeeded in bringing home the first German victory in the new Olympic class. The Danish Allan Noerregard and Line Just are still in the top position.

After nine races in the Laser, Philipp Buhl (Kiel/Germany) has finally moved onto the position where he wanted to be since the start of Kiel Week: right in front of all 81 competitors. Rank three on day four was enough to leave the previous overall leader Karl-Martin Rammo from Estonia behind, who made a mistake finishing the race as 16th. Tobias Schadewaldt won this day and thus managed to move up from rank nine to rank three overall.

The German women in the Laser are also heading into the finals from the top position. The finals are sailed for all classes except the Skiffs in a double-rated run. For Lis Fasselt (Essen/Germany) the Kiel Week is the highlight of the season.

In the 470s everything remained the same - at least at the top of the men’s fleet. Olympic winner Mathew Belcher from Australia with crew Will Ryan remains in the chasing position behind the Greek team Mantis Panagiotis and Pavlos Kagialis. On rank three are Ferdinand Gerz and Oliver Szymanski (Munich/Germany), who are still battling with the other German team Jasper Wagner and Dustin Baldewein (Berlin/Germany).

There was a change in the leading position in the 470 women’s fleet. Annina Wagner and Elisabeth Panuschka (Berlin/Germany) had to hand over the top position again to the Austrian team Lara Vadiana and Jolanta Opar.

Unchallenged in the top position are the Germans in the Paralympic classes. Heiko Kroeger (2.4mR) and Jens Kroker increased their number of victories in five races to five.

On Wednesday, the finals of the Olympic classes will be sailed on short legs with three courses. At 10am the 49erFX (TV course), Laser Radial (course India) and the Nacra17 (course Juliett) will start, followed by the 49ers at 11am (TV) and the Lasers (India) and the 470s Men (Juliett) at 11:30am.
