Ian Williams guns for 4th world match racing title at Monsoon Cup

by Monsoon Cup on 30 Nov 2012
Reigning Monsoon Cup champion Ian Williams and his GAC Pindar team is expected to come all out next week as he aims to capture his fourth world championship in the series finale of the 2012 Alpari World Match Racing Tour from December 3-8 at Yaz Heritage Marina Resort and Spa, Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.

The GAC Pindar Match Racing team, composed of Williams (skipper), Bill Hardesty (tactician), Matt Cassidy (Bow), Mal Parker, Gerry Mitchell, has already arrived at the site of the race and are now training ahead of the race opener at 10 a.m. on Monday.

Williams and the GAC Pindar team are also aiming to defend the title they won in last year’s pulsating Monsoon Cup race after scoring a 3-1 win over Johnie Berntsson (SWE) and Berntsson Sailing Team.

The British skipper has already three ISAF World Match Racing championships around his belt but the hunger to win another title remains the same.

Throughout his sailing career, Williams racked up three World Titles, three National Championships and three Youth National Championships. He is the first European to hold multiple match racing World Titles and as of the end of 2011 and is a seven times winner on the World Match Racing Tour with 21 podium finishes.

However, next week’s race proves to be a huge test for Williams and his sailing team as they duke it out against some of the best match racing squads in the world.

The Alpari World Match Racing Tour (AWMRT) is the world's leading professional sailing series featuring World-Class Championship events across the globe. The World tour offers a total of US$1.75 million in prize money with points awarded at each event culminating in the crowning of the 'ISAF Match World World Match Racing Tour Monsoon Cup website
