F18 Class Event - Flying start for the new F18 DG press SailinG Team

by DG press on 22 Apr 2015
F18 Class event - DG press SailinG Team Jasper van Staveren
F18 Class Event - The first event for the DG press SailinG Team was a great success! With no expectations at all, the F18 Class Event in Muiderzand was a splendid start for the three brand new boats of the DG press SailinG team. Only 1.5 week after DG press and Nacra Sailing decided to start a new adventure, the boats were ready to fly! On Saturday morning 18 April 2015, just before the start of the event, Olivier Bovyn and Don Findlay christened the team boats. Oscar Zeekant and Karel Begemann managed to win their first event in the new boat with a fifth place and three wins.

DG press F18’s christened by Oliver Bovyn and Don Findlay

Nacra Sailing in Scheveningen did a great job to get the team boats ready before the first F18 Class Event in Holland. After the boats were delivered on Friday evening the teams took them directly to Muiderzand. Before the start of the first race of the F18 Class Event on Saturday, the boats were christened by Oliver Bovyn and Don Findlay of the International F18 Class Association. Ready to rock and roll! On the first day of the event, the boats sailed four races in perfect conditions.

Oscar Zeekant en Karel Begemann

Oscar Zeekant and Karel Begemann, Round Texel winners in 2013, did a great job in their new boat. The first race they arrived only four minutes before the starting signal at the starting line after they had to go back to shore to carry out some repairs to the traveller. With the good speed, they manage to finish that first race in fifth place. A nice warm up for the other three races which they al won. Considering that for Oscar it was his event on a Nacra ever and they hardly had any time to prepare for the races because the boats came straight from the factory they were really happy with their results

Karel Begemann: “It’s really good to be back in the F18. The intention of the new team is to race and to have fun. We had little time to prepare our boat and started the event without any expectations. But every race we had more speed and got more eager to win.”

Peter Kloppers and Tony Mels

Peter Kloppers and Tony Mels were not as fortunate. Two of the four races they sailed ended half way due to two accidents. A big hole in the right hull of the brand new boat raised a lot of empathy form the other F18 class sailors, but it didn't help them to get a better result. They finished 18th.

Bas Paumen and Pieter Oskam

Like Oscar Zeekant, Bas Paumen and Pieter Oskam didn’t have any experience on a Nacra F18 either. The result was a 16th place in their first weekend of racing. Their placing and progress during the races on Saturday is very promising for the future.

The most important thing is to have fun

Day two of the event was marked by hardly any wind. The 25 boats didn’t race at all on Sunday. Oscar Zeekant and Karel Begemann won the event in their new boat.

Peter Kloppers: “It was a great weekend with a lot of boats at the start line. I’m very happy with the design and the visibility of the new boats, the results are promising and the first place of Oscar and Karel was beyond all expectations. And the most important thing, we had a lot of fun!”
