Extreme Sailing Series - SAP Extreme 3rd after penultimate day

by Sarah Branson on 26 Aug 2013
SAP Extreme Sailing Team - Extreme Sailing Series Act 6 Cardiff SAP Extreme Sailing Team
In the Extreme Sailing Series, the competition is wide open in Cardiff after the penultimate day of Act 6 and the SAP Extreme Sailing Team is poised to capitalize on it’s overall third position on the leaderboard. The day was not without mishap for all the teams with patchy breeze proving troublesome in the first half of the afternoon and it was only after it filled in from Race 4 onwards, that the fleet was able to perform.

The SAP Extreme Sailing Team once again rose the occasion sailing cleanly, pinching space where there looked like there was none and as the intensity rose they held their nerve and took control. Tipped by many as the ‘ones to watch’ co-skippers Rasmus Kostner and Jes Gram-Hansen are never shy of big decisions and today was no exception.

Rasmus Kostner was pleased with the end result today. 'Another extremely tricky day with the breeze here in Cardiff. It was like hide and seek at one point with it disappearing between the buildings and then gusting in through the gaps. We sought to be clean and efficient and once it filled in we were up and running. Everyone has upped their game today so to score two firsts and two seconds is outstanding.'

Jes Gram-Hansen added, 'It was a game changing afternoon with near misses, the hunt for clean air and time and distance off the start were fundamental. The series won’t be over until the final minutes of the final race tomorrow and we’re ready.'

The fighting spirit of the Danish double act will be back on the water at 1400hrs on Monday for the grand finale with everything to play for. The team has already made their mark amongst this revered fleet and will be aiming to underline this tomorrow!

Results:
1. Alinghi 166

4. Red Bull Sailing Team 157
5. Realteam 130
