Exciting new International Audi Melges 20 Ranking System now in play

by Melges 20 on 10 Jul 2014
International Audi Melges 20 Ranking System 2014 Liz Davies
Aside from all the great racing anticipated this weekend at the fourth episode of the 2014 Melges 20 Audi-Tron Sailing Series in stunning Riva Del Garda, the International Class is proud to formally present a brand new and very exciting World Ranking system.

With over 100 teams competing worldwide and 10 countries represented, Americans Wes Whitmyer on Slingshot and Richard Davies aboard Section 16 are seated respectively first and second overall. These two top competitors, whose crew consists of sailing superstars Charlie McKee, Max Fraser, Jonny 'Rockstar' Goldsberry and Matt Pistay, are tied with equal points - for now. Following in third through fifth is one of Europe's most competitive grouping of teams ever that include International Class President Manfredi Vianini Tolomei's Maolca, former Gold Cup Champion Dario Levi on Fremito D'Arja and the tenacious Mirko de Falco on Peccere.

With so much at stake in Riva, and then onto Worlds in late August, every team must sail their very best in order to conquer the new Audi Melges 20 World Ranking.

The ranking includes all the sanctioned events of the 2014 racing season in North America, Europe and Australasia. Points are assigned to:

* Top 10 classified in any sanctioned event with 29 or less boats registered
* Top 15 classified in any sanctioned event with 30-39 boats registered
* Top 20 classified in any sanctioned event with 40 or more boats registered

Also:
* Boats registered but did not attend will be scored 0 points
* Any helmsman ranked can be substituted by his own alternate helm (using the same sail inventory) and collect the points taken by the alternate helm in no more than one sanctioned event.
* Any charter helmsman is ranked with his own points.
* Scoring points are as follows:
