Around 20 boats from class J80 will participate this weekend at Barcelona’s Maresme waterfront in the Catalan Championship hosted by Club Náutico El Balís. The race has turn into the final rehearsal for the European competition of this class, which will take place in two weeks at the same city of Sant Andreu de Llavaneres.

All Catalan teams are ready for their regional competition, but many others have traveled to CN El Balís from places like the Balearic Islands, Murcia and Poland with the goal of trying out the Maresme racing environment which will host the races of the European Championship from June 30 to July 4.

The 'Great Sailing' boat skippered by 2012 world champion José María van der Ploeg (CN El Balís), the 'New Territories' commanded by Portuguese sailor and current world champion Hugo Rocha (CN Arenys de Mar), 'Deltastone' of Murcia’s Carlos Martínez (CN Los Nietos), 'HM-Hotels' skippered by Mallorca’s Javier Chacartegui (CN S’Arenal) and 'Bribón-Movistar' owned by Marc de Antonio (RCN Barcelona) and winner of the Gaastra PalmaVela and the Conde de Godó-Merchbanc Trophy are the top favorites boats this weekend.

The powerful national fleet will face the Polish power of Boska Powel’s 'Moonraker', a boat that recently signed inn for the race.

The J80 European Championship is organized by CN El Balís, the Spanish and Catalan Sailing Federations and the Spanish and International J80 Associations. The event is supported by the General Secretary’s Office of Sports of the Catalan Government, the City Hall of Sant Andreu de Llaveneres and Spain’s National Sports Council.
