Blokart Worlds heads to the desert in 2012, Ivanpah dry lake bed, USA

by Ross Vickers on 8 Dec 2010
Ivanpah comes alive - 2012 Blokart World Championships Fran Gramkowski

The North American Blokart Sailing Association (NABSA) has been selected as host for the 2012 Blokart World Championships. The event will be sailed at a venue often called the Mecca of land yachting, Ivanpah dry lake bed situated near the Californian / Nevada boarder town of Primm.

Ivanpah Lake is a dry lake bed in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, California on the border of California and Nevada. Nestled in the Ivanpah Valley near Primm on Interstate 15, the 35-square-mile (34 km2) lake is almost entirely within California.

On March 26, 2009, the world land speed record for a wind-powered vehicle was set at Ivanpah by the Greenbird, clocked at 126.1 mph (202.9 km/h).

Ivanpah was chosen by the NABSA as the location for its bid to host the 2012 Blokart World Championships as it meets the 4 main criteria that the organisers set in finding a venue, those being, easy access, great weather, a massive racing area with the ability to hold two separate courses, and as it is very well known as the Mecca of Blokart sailing.

With a unanimous 'YES' from the International Blokart Racing Association, NABSA has swung in to action to make the event successful. With around 200+ entries expected from 10 to 15 countries, the wide open venue is sure to produce some excellent racing. Early indications are that most, if not all current world champions will be making the trip to defend their titles.

The racing schedule allows for a number of warm up days prior to the North American Blokart Sailing Championships (NABSC) starting April 5th, 2012. This event will be used by many as a lead in event to the world championships and in itself will be a tightly contested regatta. The world championships follow hot on their heels starting April 8th, 2012 and run through until April 13th.

2012 too far away? Not to worry Ivanpah is set to come alive this season also with the 2011 NABSC being held March 25th to 30th as a preview regatta to next years main event. Blokart Sailors from Spain, the UK, New Zealand and Australia have already signalled their intentions to make the journey for what will prove to be an invaluable experience in the lead up to 2012.

2011 NABSC information and entries, along with 2012 venue, accommodation, schedule, rules and tourist information are now available on the 2012 event website http://www.blokartworlds2012.org
