Azzurra is in her home waters in Costa Smeralda ready to begin competition with 11 other teams in the Audi Settimana delle Bocche, second event in the 52 Super Series 2016.
Azzurra is ready in Porto Cervo for the beginning of the Audi Settimana delle Bocche, second event in the 52 Super Series 2016 set to start tomorrow in the waters off Porto Cervo. The event is organized and hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda whose burgee Azzurra flies. There will be up to ten races including windward/leewards and as many as two coastal races in this event which will conclude on Saturday, July 2.
Azzurra is defending champion in the 52 Super Series and has to recover points on Quantum, the team that won the first event of the Series held last month in Scarlino, Tuscany. The fleet is very competitive and now has grown to twelve boats with the addition of a new British team aboard Sorcha, further proof that the 52 Super Series is the most attractive and competitive monohull racing series today.
Azzurra’s team will be wearing Slam sailing gear, an excellent choice for style, comfort and protection across a broad range of sailing conditions again this season.
North-westerly strong Mistral winds forced the Race Committee to abandon the practice race today. Racing is scheduled to start tomorrow, Tuesday June 28th at noon.
Quotes of the day:
Riccardo Bonadeo, Commodore of the YCCS: “On behalf of the entire YCCS I would like to extend my warmest welcome to our club members the Roemmers family – who own Azzurra - and welcome Azzurra's team, YCCS sporting members since last year. I also want to welcome all of the competing teams. We are very happy to be hosting this event in the 52 Super Series and are proud that a sailing event as important this is held annually within our Audi Settimana delle Bocche. In 2015 Azzurra won here in her home waters and went on to have a fabulous season. In my role as Commodore of this club I want to greet all of the 12 teams competing and may the best team win!”
Guillermo Parada, skipper: “We are very much looking forward to this new opportunity. We are not satisfied with our performance at Scarlino, we performed below par and we had a couple of issues, but we think we’re moving forward. So this is a new opportunity and we need to make the most of it to show that we are still in contention for this season. We’re looking forward to it, we’re happy, we want to fight and we’re feeling very much alive.”
Vasco Vascotto, tactician: “Competing aboard Azzurra in her home waters is always special and makes us even more motivated to do our best. We know we have to improve, we're working hard and we know that our competition is working just as hard as we are. That's sports, that's sailing, and we're here to give it our best shot.'
