Dos de los equipos que competirán en la próxima Volvo Ocean Race han salido esta mañana del puerto norteamericano de Newport, en Rhode Island, hacia Gosport, Reino Unido, en sendas travesías transatlánticas.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing y Team Alvimedica tienen estrictamente prohibido medirse durante el recorrido, pero han recibido permiso para tomar la salida al mismo tiempo como parte de una acción promocional que ha sido seguida por cientos de fans.

El equipo esponsorizado por el emirato árabe y patroneado por Ian Walker realizó hace apenas unos días el recorrido contrario, 3.116 millas desde Portugal a Rhode Island. Una travesía no exenta de sorpresas, como el saludo del gigante RMS Queen Mary 2, con el cual se cruzaron en una zona de icebergs.

'Habíamos navegado apenas cinco días sin ver ningún otro barco cuando de repente el RMS Queen Mary 2 aparece a 250 metros de distancia', explicaba Walker. 'Hablé con el capitán por la radio, se acercó e hizo sonar la chimenea tres veces. Todos los invitados estaban en las cubiertas saludando, fue un momento increíble'.

Tras llegar a Inglaterra, Azzam, nombre del barco emiratí, se preparará para la Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week, la primera de las competiciones en las que participará como preparación para la Volvo Ocean Race. Le seguirá la Vuelta a la Isla de Wight-Artemis Challenge Race el 7 de agosto, y la Sevenstar Round Britain & Ireland Race el 10 del mismo mes.

Team Alvimedica también zarpó desde la bahía de Narragansett en Newport con dirección a Southhampton, localidad que los barcos no volverán a visitar hasta mayo del año que viene, durante la vuelta al mundo.

'No es fácil dejar atrás a amigos y familia pero es hora de navegar', explicaba el skipper de Team Alvimedica Charlie Enright. 'Tenemos que maximizar el tiempo que nos queda para entrenar juntos, en equipo, en el agua'.
