29er North American Championship - Final series kicks off

by Marianne Davis on 24 Jul 2014
2014 29er North American Open CORK
Today kicked off the final series of the 29er North American Open, in which competitors are competing for the North American, United States and Canadian Championships. Competition is strong in the final series, with the fleet now split into gold and silver. Today provided shifty, challenging wind conditions in the morning due to rain and surrounding storms, however the sun appeared and a strong breeze came in for the afternoon.

The gold fleet started the day at 11am and finished four races, to finish the day ahead an extra race ahead of schedule. Aussies Kurt Hansen and Harry Morton sit at the top of the leaderboard with a solid 1-3-6-1 in today’s races. Marta Munte and Carla Munte, of Spain, finish the day in second, with Canadians Rachel Spinelli and Ian Woodbury following in third. The third, fourth and fifth place boats are all within one point of each other, so tomorrow will bring some fierce competition for the podium.

The silver fleet had a 12pm start time, and completed the scheduled three races. Great Britain is dominating the podium, with Gillies Munro and Daniel Harris sitting in first, with James Grummett and Daniel Budden following in second and Ed Connellan and Matthew Rhodes in third.

The final day of racing is tomorrow, with the awards ceremony occurring after racing is completed for the day. Following this event is the 29er World Championship, July 26th to August 2nd, in which 102 boats representing 14 countries will compete for the title of 29er World Champion.

Results are provisional as of 8:46 on July 24, 2014
