2015 Melges 20 Audi-Tron Sailing Series – Opening day in Porto Venere

by International Audi Melges 20 Class Association on 10 May 2015
Opening day in Porto Venere - 2015 Melges 20 Audi-Tron Sailing Series Mauro Melandri / BPSE
2015 Melges 20 Audi-Tron Sailing Series – Opening day in Porto Venere gave way to four races, producing four different winners, but it is Mirko De Falco's Peccere leading the overall standings going into Sunday's final races. Seated second overall, ten points behind is Denmark's Bo Boje Pedersen on UpUpUp. 2014 Audi-Tron Sailing Series Champion Guido Miani on Out of Reach is tied in points with Pedersen, yet seated third on countback.

Light and tricky conditions prevailed most of the day with the first race won by Pasquale Orofino's Raffica, who played the shifts just right to win over Lorenzo Lupi's Torpyone finishing second and Pedersen getting off to a great start finishing third.

De Falco conquered race two with another up-and-coming champion - Agusta Corrado's Customly claiming second and Wilma Homann's Fantastichina third.

Pedersen came back in the third race of the Series to win, a nice recovery considering his twenty-second finish in Race Two. Marco Franchini's Mezza Luna did remarkably well to finish second and European Fleet President Manfredi Vianini Tolomei on Maolca got a piece of the podium action to come third.

The last race of the day summed it all up with Loano Champion Dario Levi on Fremito D'Arja with the win. Vianini Tolomei had another great race to finish second followed by De Falco, ultimately giving him the overall lead.

At the end of the day - a very special thanks to Wilma Homann for beer on the docks as a gentle reminder and friendly invitation to attend the Nepomuk Cup/German Open Championship scheduled for June 26-27 at the wonderful Bayerischer Yacht Club.

More racing is anticipated on Sunday with a start time of 11.00. After six races, a discard goes into play which could shuffle the standings for extra excitement.
