2015 Kieler Woche – A great success

The Kieler Woche again offered the whole range of offshore sailing, starting with the Welcome Race, continuing with the short Kiel Cup races for three days and finishing with the long distance race 'Silbernes Band' and the medium distance race 'Senatspreis'.

ORC Vice President and Chairman of the DSV Sailing Committee Dr. Wolfgang Schaefer was very satisfied after the Kieler Woche. 'After the great success of the World Championship in the previous year in Kiel we were worried that many crews would step back a bit and we have to go through a low. Of course, it is a bit less. But the offshore sailing scene did remain on a good level', said Schaefer, who himself is sailing a Farr40 in America, but did join the crew of 'Resolute' owned by DSV President Dr. Andreas Lochbrunner for the start of the Kieler Woche to watch the sailing action live.

'Now we hope, that the International German Chamionship in Flensburg in autumn will be a success. The Danish sailors will sure show up with a big fleet, having the ORC World Championship in Copenhagen next year in sight. The cooperation between the two countries continues to get even better.'

The sporting highlight is the Kiel Cup sailed at the Kieler Woche. The 'Immac All4One' with helmsman Kai Mares (Daenischenhagen) did sail the courses flawlessly at the top of fleet of ORC I and did take revenge for the messed up second part of the Welcome Race by bringing home a superior victory. Being the clear winner of the ORCIII/IV, Knut Freudenberg's (Amrum) 'Halbtrocken' did not have to start for the last race, while the ORC II boats had a close duel fighting for the winner's trophy. By winning the last race, the 'Xen' from Sven Christensen did take the lead off Peter Beck Mickelsen's (Flensburg) 'BM Yachting', which had the same point score.

'We are happy having accomplished another three demanding races in today's high waves. Even more races were planned. But the crews were quite freezing in 13 degrees and with the wind chill, so we decided to send them ashore earlier', explained Race Director Stefan Kunstmann.

In the 'Farr 30' ranking, World Champion Harald Bruening (Neumuenster) with his boat 'Topas' did bring home the victory. Bruening already won in Marstrand and is again the favourite for the Farr Curcuit, which is going on to Warnemuender Woche and then finishing at the Europeans in Sweden.

The medium distance 'Welcome Race' to Eckernfoerde and back on the next day for the Kieler Woche start was won by the silver race boat 'Desna'. The yacht owned by Sven Wackerhagen (Kiel) did finish the race back from Eckernfoerde in ORC I on rank two and thus was in rank one in the total ranking after having finished the first leg to Eckernfoerde on rank five. It was a close victory with 'X-Day' from Niels Gauter (Hamburg) and 'El Pocko' from Thomas Jungblut (Hamburg) finishing with the same point score in the end.

In the other the ORC classes, it was also the consistent performance leading to success. 'Xen' from Sven Christensen (Kiel) did win in ORC II with a rank one and a rank four. 'Static Electric' owned by Heiko Paesler (Cuxhaven) did finish in top position with two victories in ORC III/IV.

The medium distance race for the 'Senatspreis' was the finish of the Kieler Woche for the offshore sailors. ORC I was won by 'X-Day' owned by Nils Gauter (Hamburg), followed by Sven Wackerhagen's (Kiel) 'Desna'. In the fleets of the smaller yachts, 'Halbtrocken Xpress' owned by Michael Berghorn (Amrum) in first position and 'Penta' (Ulrich Amann, Arnis) in second in ORC II as well as the counterparts in ORC III/IV 'Halbtrocken' owned by Knut Freudenberg (Amrum), followed by 'Otago' from Klaus Born (Moenkeberg) did repeat their success from the long distance race, which had been won by 'IMMAC All4One' in ORC I.
