by Elena Giolai on 26 Jul 2015
2015 European O'pen Bic - Final day Fabio Staropoli/Fotofiore.com
European O'pen Bic - great conclusion at Circolo Vela Arco with five races sailed on the last racing day. Among the under 16, Federico Zampiccoli already O'pen Bic World Champion in 2013 and athlete of the organizing club is the new European Champion. On the podium there are other two Italian sailors - Philip Vincis and Leonardo Chistè.

Two German brothers Magnus and Lennart Frohmann have been the best among the youngest Under 13. The first Italian in this category has been Gregori Cordero di Montezemolo, who is fifth in the overall results.

The final day in Circolo Vela Arco, on the waters of Lake Garda Trentino in which the European Championships in youth class O'pen Bic took place, has been very intensive. Despite the unlucky start of the first day (Thursday) when the wind didn’t show up, the event fully recovered force with many races in excellent windy conditions for the 125 young sailors coming from 10 different nations. The last day, the participants began to race at 10 AM, with the North wind and completing two races. After the lunch break the South wind started to blow regularly, and also reached 16 knots. The fleet has been sent again on the water to go on with the daily program. The Under 13 athletes have thus raced two more races, while the U16 and the U19 were able to conclude other three of them, for a total of nine, allowing to apply the second discard in the overall standings.

Circolo Vela Arco - organizing and agonistic success

This Championship has been a great team performance for the atlhets of Circolo Vela Arco, who won in the category Women's Under-13 with Alessia Benolli (eighth in the overall results and absolute protagonist). European Champion in the Under 19 category has been Veronika Živná (CV Arco athlete, who trains on Garda Trentino although she lives in Czech Republic). Gold and bronze medals in the large category (Under 16, with 80 participants) have been won respectively by Federico Zampiccoli and Leonardo Chistè, who usually race together in the double class 29er. A lot of medals that begins to pay the commitment of the club for the young sailors.

'Despite a difficult start in absence of wind and some storm, this European Championship was at the end a great and beautiful Event, decided after several races, played in various and different conditions, with winds from South and North with different intensities. The spirit of the event remained very playful and funny as it is the DNA of the O'pen Bic Class, including challenging regattas, early morning and many moments of social' - said the President of the Circolo Vela Arco Luca Nardelli just before the awards ceremony - 'Success is not only the organization of the Circolo Vela Arco, but also a team with three European titles O'pen Bic won in three categories Under-13 Women's Under-16 and Under-19 is a nice reward for all the members and collaborators diligently lend a hand during events of this caliber' - said Nardelli.

Under-13 category, 40 participants

Until the last race the situation was in perfect equality among the top three with the German brothers Magnus and Lennart Frohmann and the French Bunel with 16 points. Therefore the eighth and last race has been decisive: Magnus Frohmann won, leaving at second place his brother Lennart.

Italians have never been able to attack seriously the podium; sin for a disqualification taken by Leopoldo Sirolli, which partly compromised his position in the final results: he was sixth overall, and passed during the last race by his teammate Gregori Cordero di Montezemolo (Tognazzi Marine Village), who finished the Championship with a beautiful partial victory, which allowed him to reach the fifth place. Alessia Benolli athletes of the hosting club, was eighth overall and first among the females.

Under-16 category, 80 participants

The last day with five races has revolutionized the overall standings and curiously has seen the same athletes in the same positions of the podium of the Italian Championship O'pen Bic of last year. At two races by the end Federico Zampiccoli (bearer of the Circolo Vela Arco) get very close to the championship leader Felipe Vincis (LNI Sulcis); during the eighth race Zampiccoli took over the lead with three points ahead. Leonardo Chistè, after managing to pass the Polish Budzisz by a single point, was able to keep at least the third place. Then the decisive ninth and final race, which was won by Zampiccoli, which has kept the same advantage of Vincis and went on to win this European Championship O'pen Bic after the World title won in 2013 in Riva del Garda. Second place for Vincis and sweaty third place to the other athlete of Circolo Vela Arco Chistè Leonardo, who lost for a moment the helm during the last race he finished eleventh, but still managed to finish third in a tie with the other Italian Ludovico journo (Tognazzi Marine Village) protagonist of a great recovery in the final against the Polish Budzisz. The first female has been the Polish Natalia Kuczys, seventh overall behind Andrea Milano (LNI Crotone).

Under 19

Victory without great battles for the athlete of Circolo Vela Arco Živná Veronika, who shoved it eight first positions and one second. Behind him, the Portuguese Championship Pires de Lima and third the Australian Taylor Kaiella.
