With today’s second and third place finishes, Azzurra is gaining positions in the overall results, but the real objective at PalmaVela is to perfect the new boat for the start of the 52 Super Series.
The TP52s had two windward/leeward races today in the waters off Palma in breezes from six to nine knots. The Azzurra team is continuing to perfect the new boat and is honing their skills in view of the first official event in the 52 Super Series: the Ford Vignale Valencia Sailing Week that will be held from May 19th-23rd.
Today’s racing was dominated by Azzurra’s rivals Quantum Racing, who got two first place finishes. Azzurra placed third in the first race behind Interlodge with Dean Barker at the helm. In the second race Azzurra battled with Quantum during the first beat staying close on the heels of their rivals right up to the end.
Tomorrow there will be two more windward/ leeward races in winds that are predicted to be light. The warning signal will go up at 12 noon.
Azzurra’s Facebook page and Twitter account will have news directly from the regatta course.
Quotes of the day:
Skipper Guillermo Parada: “We had a nervous day and we still have to learn a few lessons about the boat. We need to improve our finesse executing some maneuvers, but I think all in all the boat is sailing well and we’re satisfied with that. Obviously Quantum had a fantastic day on the water winning both races but we still have two more days in front of us and we hope to catch up to them.”
Tactician Vasco Vascotto: “There is someone who is doing better than we are but at PalmaVela it isn’t important for us to win, it’s important that we get to know the new boat. Things are going well here for us in that sense and we’re satisfied; we’re gathering a lot of information that will be especially useful for us in the future. Our first real race will be in Valencia in less than twenty days, for now we think we’re at least as fast as the winning boat was last season.”
