Abu Dhabi contrata quatro velejadores para Volvo Ocean Race

Os experientes atletas Justin Slattery (Irlanda), Phil Harmer (Austrália), Simon Fisher (Reino Unido) e Andrew McLean (Nova Zelândia) se juntam à equipe árabe.

O time do Abu Dhabi Ocean Race confirmou, nesta segunda-feira (10), um pacote de reforços para a disputa da Volvo Ocean Race. O comandante Ian Walker contratou quatro experientes velejadores para correr a Volta ao Mundo com base em regatas passadas. Os escolhidos foram: Justin Slattery (Irlanda), Phil Harmer (Austrália), Simon Fisher (Reino Unido) e Andrew McLean (Nova Zelândia).

'Os velejadores trazem para a equipe habilidade e experiência de sobra e eu não poderia estar mais feliz por tê-los a bordo', disse Ian Walker. 'Já velejamos juntos e gostamos do que fazemos. Isso pode ser um fator importante no ambiente no veleiro, já que o barco vira uma panela de pressão numa regata de nove meses ao redor do mundo'.

Os novos velejadores do Abu Dhabi se juntam ao árabe Adil Khalid, ao australiano Luke Parkinson (tripulante sub-23) e o britânico Tom Bushell ( repórter a bordo). O último tripulante do barco será anunciado nos próximos dias pelo Abu Dhabi. Os integrantes da equipe visitaram a cidade árabe e o próximo evento será fazer testes no barco Volvo Ocean 65. Em março, o Abu Dhabi seguirá para sua base de treinos, em Portugal.

O comandante Ian Walker foi auxiliado por Neal McDonald, manager do Abu Dhabi, para definir os novos nomes para seu time. 'Estou certo de que fizemos a escolha certa. É uma equipe sólida e sem egos. O grupo é formado por velejadores de nível internacional e todos têm em comum o desejo pela vitória e foco'.

O proeiro irlandês Justin Slattery volta ao Abu Dhabi depois da edição passada. Será a terceira Volvo Ocean Race do atleta. Outro que retornou ao time árabe foi o britânico Simon Fisher, que fez de tudo um pouco no barco na temporada passada. O australiano Phill Harmer estava no francês Groupama, vencedor em 2011-12. O neozelandês Andrew McLean ficou em segundo com o Volvo Ocean Race
