It is now day three of the Zhik International Etchells Australian Championship, the 2012 Pre-worlds and the podium is still empty with several teams all capable of stepping up.
Zhik Etchells Australian Championships 2012 startline Race 3
Each of the top six boats already have one high-points race that they would rather not have in their results. The pressure is on them today to ensure there are no more bad races on their scorecard.
The teams to watch today, based on the fleet completing two races and then their worst result being dropped are - Southern Light (John Savage) with 22/1/6, Gen XY (Matthew Chew) with 28/5/4 and Bad Doll (Tom Braidwood) with 4/28/5 results for the first three races.
These are the teams that series leader, Two Speed (Julian Plante), with results to date of 17/6/3, will need to be watching carefully. Like Plante, they have shown their ability to sail very competitively in the light airs.
Today’s forecast will again suit these teams, if they can hold their focus. Shifting breezes of between five and 10 knots from the east will provide another excellent opportunity for light-air configured boats to lead the fleet, as long as their starts are good and their lane tactics smart.
A total of eight races have been scheduled for the Zhik Etchells Nationals being held by Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at Pittwater. The final race day is tomorrow.
The International Etchells 2012 Australian Championship is sponsored by Zhik, North Sails, Pacesetter Yachts, Protector Yachts and Wetton Signage Group.
