Easy Tiger Racing's Josh McKnight - 2013 Moth International NSW Championship
'I'm super stoked with this result. It’s my first NSW Moth Title and it gives me real confidence in the lead up to defending my Moth World Title in Hawaii in October. It's taken a lot of hard work to achieve this result but it's so worth it,' Josh McKnight said.
Hosted by the St George Sailing Club, the three-day event kicked off on Good Friday with four races. McKnight led the regatta after day one thanks to his consistent results of 2,1,1,2 however local sailor David Lister and training partner Scott Babbage made sure the pressure stayed on the 21 year old 2012 Moth World Champion.
Racing was delayed on the second day and the choppy sea state didn’t help matters. Lister leveraged his local knowledge to score three bullets and snatch the overall lead while McKnight managed 4,2,3 and Babbage scored 3,3,2.
Despite light fluky conditions on the final day McKnight turned things around and his 2,1,2 score secured him the title. The fleet was brought ashore after the wind died out after the second race of the day and the final medal race was eventually held in a more suitable 15-20 knots
'Today I just tried to think only about the next race and not have the end result in my mind. I worked hard at staying up there with the leading guys and I figured if I did that I’d be OK and still in it with a chance.'
'Racing today was very tight between David Lister and myself. He sails very fast and is always pushing hard. He beat me in the first race but I managed to return the favour in the second race in the very light conditions.
'There was some very close racing between myself and Scott Babbage, David Lister and Andrew McDougall but I managed to hold them off in the last race. Racing on the St Georges River in Sydney's south was challenging given the range of conditions that we were dealt during the regatta. The one-way track follow the leader course meant there were very limited passing lane opportunities.'
