Extreme Sailing Series 2013: fiddle-dee-dee in Singapore?
Thu, 11 Apr 2013
Making its debut as a regular Extreme venue, a hot and steamy Singapore will deliver light wind conditions for all four days of the event with almost no gradient wind creating frustration and forcing errors among the eight crews. Bouts of crash and burn that typify Extreme 40 racing are likely to give way to games of fiddle-dee-dee after a forecast for Singapore predicted virtually no wind for Act 2 of the Extreme Sailing Series starting on Thursday.
What breeze there is will come from local thermal effects which are set to be very shifty, making it more difficult than usual to assess form. Local knowledge will prove vital which puts Team Aberdeen Singapore competing as an invitational team, at an advantage since two local Singaporeans Scott Glen Sydney and Justin Wong have been selected as members of Rob Greenhalgh’s crew.
Although new to the fleet, Greenhalgh is confident the fluky conditions could work in their favour. 'The Wave, Muscat and Red Bull Sailing Team are the ones to beat I think, but the final podium spot is up for grabs possibly,' said Greenhalgh, who won the first Extreme championship in 2007. 'I think this event will be even closer at the top than in Muscat with more teams fighting for the podium.'
Racing in Marina Bay Reservoir starts on Thursday with the eight strong fleet racing in stadium mode for four days, including a knock out series The Aberdeen Challenge Trophy planned for Friday evening.
