Tassie Trio 2012 - Busy night at Elizabeth Street Pier
Sun, 30 Dec 2012

In the cold of the Hobart night the ORCV crew were kept busy greeting boats finishing in the Westcoaster race.

Skipper Ashley Trebilcock steered Bandit across the line at 01:04 in what has been a very creditable performance. Having taken handicap honours in the Boxing Day Dash, Trebilcock will be keen to hear the final handicap placing’s for this race as he now turns his thoughts to capturing the three race series, Soveriegn Series. The final race of that series, the King of the Derwent, will be held on 2nd January.

Whilst we now know that Goldfinger have taken the Handicap honours in the Eastcoaster race the Westcoaster race has one wrinkle. In true sailing tradition when Afrayed Knot was dis-masted on Friday both Turbulence and Yoko ceased racing and ‘stood by’ to give assistance. Consequently Race Director, Don Fraser will convene a jury later today to discuss redress for both boats. Redress will be given and elapsed times modified which could impact the current handicap positions.

Turbulence and Yoko once recommenced racing have tussled all the way to Hobart with the lead changing many times and the tracker often showing them almost sitting on top of each other. This continued in the light morning breezes of the Derwent with Yoko eventually leading Turbulence across the line just five minutes ahead. Yoko skipper Robin Hewitt has now completed his 31st consecutive Melbourne to Hobart Westcoaster race and has seen that race from ever weather perspective so he undoubtedly had a few tricks that helped along the way.

The second boat in the Eastcoaster race is just about to cross the line; Dry White skippered by Simon Dryden took the unusual decision to go inside Maria Island yesterday. This tactic did pay off giving them a couple of extra miles on their rivals and a respite from the rough seas.

Finish Times:
