The idea of blasting for removal of paint or dirt has been around for a long time, but the technology has improved radically over the last 50 years. If you are looking for a environmentally sound way of cleaning your hull without using chemicals or spending a VERY long time scraping, you need to consider the idea of dustless blasting, using ground glass. Amazing? Read on:
The Dustless Hull Blasting System from MMLJ Manufacturing uses an environmentally inert combination of water and recycled bottled glass to remove paint and marine growth from boat bottoms without harming the gelcoat in 1/10th the time as traditional techniques.
Dustless blasting uses a minimal amount of water (about 15% of a power washer consumption).
The inert combination delivered through a Dustless Blasting machine encapsulates the hull coating being removed, never giving it the opportunity to become airborne. So the glass and the marine growth end up together below the boat, and most of the water mists into the air.
A simple plastic sheet underneath the boat will then capture the abrasive and coating together for quick and easy disposal.
