MBE for rescuer after 44 years in the RNLI

'Charlie Tulloch MBE - after 44 years'    .
Whether racing or cruising, in times of trouble the safety of the leisure sailor is often in the hands of a volunteer who is willing to risk his or her own personal safety perform a rescue. It is therefore gladdening to see notable volunteers recognised for the work that they do. Charlie Tulloch, from Kinghorn Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is one such.

Charlie, recently retired as operations manager of the Kinghorn base just to the north of Edinburgh in Scotland, has been made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for his services to the RNLI over 44 years. The award was made in the Queen's New Year honours.

Charlie actually joined the crew when the original request came from the RNLI to form a lifeboat crew there. That was in 1964. He served as a crew member until 1993, when he 'retired' to become Operations Manager of the unit. He retired in 2010 from that role too, but is still involved in the Institution, serving on the Scottish Lifeboat Council.

Speaking about the award, Charlie said, 'This award came as a huge surprise and a great honour. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the station seeing many changes throughout; four different stations, four classes of lifeboat, and all the people I have had the opportunity to work with over this time. The support I have had throughout has been great, and the goodwill messages over the past week have been overwhelming!'

Current Kinghorn Lifeboat Operations Manager Paul Wibberley continued, 'This is a magnificent award, and thoroughly deserved. We are delighted Charlie Tulloch has been recognised with an MBE. Everyone at the Station is delighted to hear of this fitting and timely award.'

Well done, Charlie, and thank you from the sailors out here who depend on your and your thousands of colleagues' good services, at most for saving our lives and at the very least for peace of mind just knowing you are there!
