Sail-World.com : Indian Coastguard rescues Australian yacht

Indian Coastguard rescues Australian yacht

'Generous help on the ocean. Maersk Claudia went to the rescue of two Australians, who were then towed to Mumbai by the Indian Coast Guard'    .

First reports from India indicate that the Australian yacht Dish Dash had been sailing for four days after an electrical breakdown before it notified the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination centre in Kuala Lumpur that help was needed.

After the electrical power breakdown, the yacht attempted to continue its journey from Male in the Maldives to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Following receipt of the distress signal, the Indian Coast Guard launched a Dornier aircraft from Daman to locate the vessel, which was approximately 158 miles west of the Mumbai coast. However, with no power on board sufficient to use its VHF radio, the Dornier returned to base.

The Coast Guard then asked a merchant vessel, which was sailing close by, to divert its course and offer assistance. The MV Maersk Claudia informed the Coast Guard that there were two Australians on board.

In the meantime, the Coastguard ship Veera was diverted to help the crew. However, the technical team could not fix the electrical problem onboard the yacht, so it was decided that Dish Dash be towed to Mumbai.

The names of the two Australians on board have not been released.
