RYA Cruise in Company - crossing the channel in June 2011

'RYA Cruise in Company - June this year. Go for it!'    .
British cruising sailors looking to venture further afield, there's an opportunity this year in June to cross the Channel with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) cruise in company. Here's the call from the RYA:

Whether you’re crossing the Channel for the first time or just enjoy having the peace of mind that there are other boats following the same route and there is an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor close at hand who can offer advice and assistance, the Sail Cruise, sponsored by Hamble School of Yachting and in association with World Cruising Club, can provide skippers with a small confidence boost to broaden their cruising horizons.

Taking place from 12 – 18 June, the cruise heads out from Haslar Marina in Gosport on Monday 13 June, following registration, skippers briefing and welcome reception on Sunday, for Chantereyne Marina, Cherbourg.

Following a social day in Cherbourg including the Sail Cruise pontoon party on Tuesday, the fleet heads off to Victoria Marina, St Peter Port Guernsey. Thursday is another free day, where you can take in the sights of Guernsey and enjoy the evenings’ drinks reception, before heading to Braye Harbour in Alderney on Friday 17 and then dispersing for home ports on Saturday 18.

'The RYA Sail Cruise is a fun and sociable way to cross the channel for the first time. The knowledge that 19 other boats will be taking the same route at the same time can make the thought of being out of sight of land less daunting.

'With our dedicated cruise Yachtmaster Instructor on hand to demystify the dreaded course to steer the majority of our participants find their first channel crossing much more pleasurable than they anticipated', commented Carol Paddison, RYA Cruising Officer.

The RYA Sail Cruise is open to members and non-members but each boat must consist of an RYA member – skipper or crew who must be taking part in the whole cruise.

Participating boats are usually between 9.0m – 12.0m LOA.

With the RYA planning the route, arranging berthing in each of the destinations and organising social activities along the way, participants can really focus on their sailing.

Places are limited and applications are generally considered on a first come first served basis, so request your application pack to book your place now.

To find out more and request your application pack email: cruising.events@rya.org.uk or call 02380 604 233.

About the RYA:
• The RYA is the national body for all forms of recreational, competitive and professional boating. It represents dinghy and yacht racing, motor and sail cruising, RIBs and sportsboats, powerboat racing, windsurfing, inland cruising and personal watercraft.

• The RYA is recognised by all government offices as being the negotiating body for the activities it represents. It continually fights for the rights and freedoms of its 102,000 personal members, the majority of whom choose to go afloat for purely recreational non-competitive pleasure on coastal and inland waters. There are an estimated further 500,000 boat owners nationally who are members of RYA affiliated clubs and class associations.

• The RYA also sets and maintains a recognised standard for recreational boat training through a network of 2,340 RYA Recognised Training Centres in over 43 countries. On average 155,000 people per year complete RYA training courses.

• The RYA is committed to promoting all forms of boating and making them accessible to everyone. For more information please refer to our web site www.rya.org.uk
