You only have days left to nominate the cruising sailor that you think deserves to be recognised in the Australian Yachting Awards. Do YOU know a sailor that has made an outstanding achievement in the past year? Who has sailed an unbelievable journey, contributed to their club or spent a lifetime selflessly helping their yachting club or other sailors? After checking with the Australian Yachting Award officials last year, the top awards - Male Sailor of the Year, Female Sailor of the Year, Youth Sailor of the year, that normally seem to go to racing sailors - are open to all. In the last few years that we have checked, apart from the amazing young round world sailor Jessica Watson, no cruising sailors have even made the nominations. Yachting Australia maintain that they represent all yachting, not just competitive yachting. Non-competitive sailors have to be in it to win it. What about nominating your deserving non-competitive sailor this year? Nominations close on September 5, so there's still time if you get moving. The winners will be announced at the 2011 Australian Yachting Awards at Luna Park in Sydney on Friday October 28. The 2011 Australian Yachting Awards categories are as follows: - Male Sailor of the Year - Female Sailor of the Year - Sailor of the Year with a Disability - Youth Sailor of the Year - Sport Promotion Award - Lifetime Achievement Award - Sport Professional Award - Volunteer Award Anyone in the sailing community can make a nomination with forms and criteria available on the Yachting Australia website via the following link Yachting Awards Information. Nominations for the awards may be made in respect of achievements during the period 16 August 2010 and 31 August 2011 with clubs, class associations and the general sailing community asked to look closely at who they would like to see nominated for an award. Specific details regarding the venue and ticket sales will be announced shortly. For more information visit www.yachting.org.au.
