'Dutch teen sailing brothers go sailing to campaign for their right to an education'
.
|
Inspired by Dutch/New Zealand sailor Laura Dekker, who was held back by Dutch authorities for over a year by authorities who wanted to stop her going long-range sailing, now two dyslexic Dutch teenagers have set off on a year-long sailing trip to campaign for their right to an education. 15-year-old Enrique Claassen and his 13-year-old brother Hugo hadn’t been able to attend classes in over a year because no school is willing to accept them. They are both highly gifted but suffer from severe dyslexia. Two years ago, Enrique's school told his parents that he would not be able to graduate and expelled him. A year later, Hugo left the school for the same reason. Their parents have repeatedly tried to get them admitted to other schools, but without success. As a result, the two boys spend all their time at home and have almost no friends. Since home-schooling is forbidden in the Netherlands, their parents are breaking the law. Inspired by Laura Dekker, the young Dutch girl who sailed around the world on her own, Enrique and Hugo decided to spend the coming year sailing around Europe - and they are doing it. They are docking in various ports and meet with officials from the United Nations and children's rights groups to raise awareness about their situation. It appears that there's no holding the Dutch youth down when they set their mind to doing something!
