French solo adventurer Francis Joyon, who circled the world in just over 57 days eight months ago, and skipper of the maxi trimaran IDEC, has left Cadiz in Spain to sail the route across the Atlantic Ocean known as the 'Discovery Route', the route taken by Christopher Columbus when he first 'discovered' the Americas - and thought it was India - in 1492.

Columbus murdered a few 'Indians' on arrival in San Salvador in the Bahamas. Francis Joyon's goal is much more peaceful, he says, as he is merely trying to beat the time of his compatriot sailor Thomas Coville, who completed the journey in ten and a half days, averaging over 15 knots for the journey

To claim a new record for the crossing he will have to cross the finish line by 07 November to 17 hours 20 minutes and 43 seconds (TU)

It is obviously much too early to talk about chances of success.

'If everything goes well, I will be in 24 hours in the Canary approach,' he felt this morning, knowing that there is a door he must meet in Gran Canaria, since the Route Discovery takes the route of Christopher Columbus in 1492.

'At 13h42, IDEC was hitting to 27.5 knots, heading 220, by 34 degrees north latitude and 8 ° 09 west longitude. The maxi trimaran was at 3,725 miles purpose and had already swallowed about 130 miles from the direct route.
